A ‘Petit Four’ Moment in Molly Ringwald's movie "All These Small Moments"

Is the petit four a grown-up’s dessert?   What does a petit four conjure in your imagination?

For Howie Sheffield (Brendan Meyers), a New York City teenager in the film  “All These Small Moments,” the petit four is the quintessence of sophistication and charm as he imagines the things enjoyed by the mystery woman who fascinates him.

In this coming of age story, Howie’s parents are on the brink of divorce, turning his previously safe world into chaos.  In the ensuing tumultuous period around relationships and love, he develops a fascination for a beautiful, enigmatic older woman (Jemima Kirke) he sees on the bus to school everyday. He begins to obsess about her, staring at her, following her, thinking of interesting conversation topics as he works up the courage to speak to her.

"No, she's just like such a woman, you know? You can tell she does like, womanly things, like gets manicures and eats petit fours."

In one scene that emanates youthful innocence, Howie is lounging in the basement with his high school friends when he wonders aloud of the sort of things his mystery crush would enjoy: “..she’s just like such a woman, you know? You can tell she does, like, womanly things, like gets manicures and eats petit fours…”

In a second story, there is a slow-forming friendship with a school student (Harley Quinn Smith) whom he is initially wary of because of falsely held rumors. Their conversations in the school library begin awkwardly but quietly simmers into something more meaningful. As he navigates though difficult episodes in life he begins to understand more about what is genuine in relationships, friendships, and love.

In one of the final and most endearing ‘small moments’, Howie is in the library with Lindsay and shares a box of the treats that he had previously imagined the mystery woman to enjoy - Petits Fours!

“And years later, when I was in my thirties and drank red wine, people called me Howard and asked me stupid questions at parties... I'd realize it had all meant something.”

Open on the study table, is a pastel blue box of petits fours (from Bon Vivant New York). Lindsay and Howie are seen talking and laughing in carefree ebullience as Lindsay enjoys a bite of the petit four adorned with a pink rosebud.

It is delightful to see Bon Vivant petits fours featured in this authentic and beautifully depicted, New York coming of age story; especially when rendered in such a sweet moment of innocent mirth.

The movie can be seen in select theaters or streamed on Amazon Prime and others.
